Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is moving from abstract theory to the real-world. But much of the conversation is dominated by technical jargon, leaving non-specialists unsure what actually matters.
This event offers a structured, accessible introduction to five core concepts that are essential for understanding the trajectory of advanced AI:
- What we mean by AGI, and why definitions matter
- Agency and the ability of AI systems to carry out longer, more complex tasks
- The “jaggedness” of AI capabilities, where systems can appear highly competent yet fail unpredictably
- The current limits of today’s AI models
- Why layered safeguards, rather than single solutions, are likely to be necessary
Each concept will be introduced in plain English, with an emphasis on real-world implications for decision-makers and communicators rather than engineers. The discussion segment will focus on ensuring participants can explain these ideas clearly themselves and draw out what they mean for their own fields, from public policy and journalism to business and civil society.
The session will be led by Will Saunter, co-founder of BlueDot Impact, an organisation that equips motivated individuals with the knowledge, community, and opportunities to help ensure powerful new technologies benefit humanity.
Location will be shared nearer the time. Light lunch and drinks provided.
